Government Keeps Petrol and Diesel Prices Unchanged Until August 17

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to keep the existing prices of petroleum products unchanged for the next three days, with petrol and high-speed diesel rates remaining at their current levels until Monday, August 17.

According to the Petroleum Division, the prices will be reviewed again on August 18, after which the government is expected to announce revised rates.

Officials said the decision to maintain the existing prices over the weekend came after the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) did not issue a fresh price review due to the official Independence Day holiday on August 14.

Petrol is currently being sold at Rs325.43 per litre, while high-speed diesel is priced at Rs383.95 per litre. The government had previously increased the price of petrol by 45 paisas per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs1.16 per litre for the period beginning August 14.

The Petroleum Division said the next review of petroleum prices would be conducted on August 18, when any possible changes will be determined.

Since July 20, petrol prices have been reduced 10 times and increased on eight occasions. During the same period, high-speed diesel prices have been reduced six times while witnessing 11 increases.

For now, consumers will continue to pay the existing rates through August 17, with the next decision on petroleum prices due on August 18.

Indonesian Woman Rescued in Hyderabad After Allegedly Being Confined by Husband

HYDERABAD: An Indonesian woman, identified as Anda Merlin, was rescued from an alleged confinement in Hyderabad after she reportedly approached officials of the Sindh Women Development Department through a message, alleging that her husband had brought her to Pakistan on the pretext of marriage and subsequently confined her to a house.

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that her husband had kept her under unlawful confinement and taken possession of her passport and other legal documents.

Following the complaint, Nasreen Palijo, in-charge of the complaint cell of the Women Development Department, took immediate notice of the matter and contacted the police. She submitted an application to the Naseem Nagar police seeking the woman’s recovery.

However, the Naseem Nagar police reportedly responded in writing that no action could be taken on the application regarding the woman’s alleged presence at the location.

With the matter remaining unresolved, Palijo approached the court. Acting on the court’s orders, police subsequently raided a house in Gul Latif Society, Qasimabad, and recovered the Indonesian woman.

The woman was later presented before the court by the Women’s Police Station.

Palijo said the law was equal for everyone and that harassing women or keeping them in unlawful confinement was a serious offence. She said the Women Development Department remained committed to taking measures for the protection and welfare of women.

She further stressed that police officers should ensure full cooperation with the Women Development Department in cases involving the safety and protection of women.

ECC Approves Rs1.34 Per Litre Increase in Petroleum Dealers’ Margin

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has approved an increase of Rs1.34 per litre in petroleum dealers’ margin, raising it to Rs9.98 per litre from Rs8.64.

The ECC meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, considered a summary submitted by the Petroleum Division and held detailed deliberations on revising dealers’ margins on Motor Spirit (MS) and High-Speed Diesel (HSD), according to a statement issued by the Finance Ministry.

Following the ECC’s approval, the dealers’ margin has been increased by Rs1.34 per litre to Rs9.98 from the previous Rs8.64 per litre.

The vice chairman of the All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association confirmed the increase and thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik.

The petroleum dealers’ association had announced an indefinite nationwide strike from August 15 but later postponed it following assurances from the government.

In a social media statement, the association attributed the increase in dealers’ margin to its “strike threat”.

According to the association, following tense negotiations in Islamabad a day earlier, the petroleum minister contacted association chairman Malik Khuda Bakhsh by telephone and informed him that the prime minister had approved a Rs1.34-per-litre increase in dealers’ margin.

According to the association president, a joint committee has also been constituted to examine dealers’ demand for an eight per cent margin and will submit its report within 30 days.

“We have postponed Saturday’s strike on the government’s assurances and will continue our protest until all our demands are accepted,” the association president said.

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema attended the ECC meeting, along with federal secretaries and senior officials of the relevant ministries and divisions.

Pakistan Celebrates 79th Independence Day With National Fervour, Ceremonies Across Country

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is celebrating its 79th Independence Day across the country with national enthusiasm and fervour, with gun salutes marking the start of the day and special prayers offered after Fajr for the country’s progress, unity, peace and prosperity.

In Karachi, a ceremonial changing of the guard was held at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah to mark Independence Day. Smartly turned-out cadets of the Pakistan Naval Academy assumed duties as the ceremonial guards.

Commandant Pakistan Naval Academy Rear Admiral Muhammad Umair, who was the chief guest at the ceremony, laid a floral wreath at the Quaid’s mausoleum and offered Fateha.

Earlier, the day began with 21-gun salutes in Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta.

Independence Day celebrations began across the country as the clock struck midnight. Cities, streets and neighbourhoods were decorated in the colours of the national flag.

Illuminations and fireworks displays were held in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan, as well as other parts of the country. Citizens took to the streets to celebrate Independence Day, while rallies were also held at various locations.

In Lahore, spectacular fireworks displays were held at Greater Iqbal Park and Liberty Chowk. Fireworks were also staged in other cities.

Dar Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Pakistan’s Sovereignty, Integrity

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar congratulated the nation on the 79th Independence Day and said the occasion was an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment to protecting the country’s sovereignty and integrity.

He extended greetings to people in Pakistan and compatriots living abroad, saying that the nation paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam’s vision and saluted the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement.

Balochistan CM Offers Talks on Independence Day

An early-morning flag-hoisting ceremony was held on the lawn of the Balochistan Assembly in Quetta.

Addressing the ceremony, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said Pakistan was created through the sacrifices of the elders and that those seeking to break it through force were “living in a fool’s paradise”.

Addressing certain Baloch groups, Bugti said he was offering them talks on the occasion of Independence Day, adding that many problems around the world had been resolved through dialogue.

He appealed to the groups to abandon the path of terrorism and return, saying that “our doors are always open”.

The chief minister said Pakistan was a nuclear-armed country and the world was now looking towards it. He added that the state would take action against those disturbing peace and engaging in terrorism.

‘True Freedom Lies in Respect for People’s Mandate’

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi congratulated the nation on Independence Day and said true freedom lay in the supremacy of the Constitution, respect for the people’s mandate and economic self-reliance.

He also paid tribute to the martyrs of the freedom movement and those who sacrificed their lives in defence of the country.

Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, meanwhile, said Independence Day was not merely about celebrations.

He said people must remember why independence from the British had been sought when they had provided roads, drains, a police system and an “excellent judicial system”. He said the actual objective was to secure the right to govern.

“We secured the right to govern from the British, but unfortunately, we could not give this right to our own people,” Achakzai said. “True freedom will come when the provinces and the people here are genuinely free.”

NADRA Launches QR Code-Based National Identity Card

ISLAMABAD: In a major step towards self-reliance, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a Pakistan-made national identity card based on a secure QR code, aimed at making digital identity verification easier and more accessible.

The new chipless polycarbonate identity card has been manufactured in Pakistan by the National Security Printing Company (NSPC), Karachi, in accordance with NADRA’s technical and security requirements.

By replacing the imported microchip with a secure QR code, the new card eliminates dependence on chips sourced from abroad while making secure digital verification easier and more efficient.

The federal government approved the issuance of the new card on February 23, 2026. The microchip has been replaced with a secure QR code that can be scanned and verified on a smartphone through the Pak Identity (PakID) mobile application.

The QR code will contain relevant identity information and the photograph of the cardholder. This will enable various institutions to enter names, addresses and other required identity information into their computerised systems more easily and consistently, while also reducing errors during data entry.

The new card will also display the family number, along with specific symbols for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, organ donors and citizens of the State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The cardholder’s name and address will be printed in both Urdu and English. Visible and hidden security features of the card have also been upgraded in line with current requirements and the manufacturing capabilities available in Pakistan.

The chip-based Smart National Identity Card was introduced around 14 years ago. However, the facilities linked to the chip could not be utilised as intended because chip readers and the required infrastructure were not practically available.

The new QR code-based card addresses this practical obstacle as it can be verified using an ordinary smartphone or appropriate software connected to a camera.

Telecom operators, banks, hospitals, Pakistan Railways, police and other authorised institutions will also be provided with software that will allow them to scan and verify the QR code printed on the card.

The new identity card is being introduced in phases. In the first phase, starting August 14, 2026, the new QR code-based polycarbonate card will replace the currently issued simple, chipless national identity card made of Teslin material.

From January 2027, the same new card will be issued for all categories of national identity cards, including the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) and Juvenile Cards.

In the final phase, the Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will also be shifted to the new chipless, QR code-based card.

All previously issued identity cards of every category will remain valid until their respective expiry dates.

‘AI Trap’: Former Sindh MPA Seeks Case Against Ex-Wife Over Alleged Fraud, Blackmail

KARACHI: Former Sindh Assembly member Ghulam Rasool Unar has approached a court seeking the registration of a criminal case against his former wife over allegations of fraud, blackmail and death threats.

In an application filed before an additional district and sessions judge in Karachi’s South district, Unar said he had come into contact with the woman through social media and married her via video call on February 23, 2026, without having seen her face in person.

His lawyer, Aamir Nawaz Warraich, told the court that whenever Unar asked the woman to show her face, she allegedly sent him AI-generated images. He further claimed that the woman wore a veil during the marriage ceremony conducted via video link.

According to the lawyer, Unar saw the woman after the marriage and found that her appearance was entirely different from the images he had allegedly been sent. He subsequently distanced himself from her, the lawyer said.

The application alleged that the woman later shared fabricated images and social media posts falsely portraying Unar as dead. Unar divorced her on August 9, according to his counsel.

Warraich told the court that a complaint had also been lodged against the former wife with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).

He further alleged that following the divorce, the woman had demanded tens of millions of rupees from Unar and was blackmailing him and threatening to have him killed.

The court issued notices to the SP Complaint Cell, the Defence police station SHO and Unar’s former wife, and directed police to submit a report by August 17.
