HYDERABAD: An Indonesian woman, identified as Anda Merlin, was rescued from an alleged confinement in Hyderabad after she reportedly approached officials of the Sindh Women Development Department through a message, alleging that her husband had brought her to Pakistan on the pretext of marriage and subsequently confined her to a house.

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that her husband had kept her under unlawful confinement and taken possession of her passport and other legal documents.

Following the complaint, Nasreen Palijo, in-charge of the complaint cell of the Women Development Department, took immediate notice of the matter and contacted the police. She submitted an application to the Naseem Nagar police seeking the woman’s recovery.

However, the Naseem Nagar police reportedly responded in writing that no action could be taken on the application regarding the woman’s alleged presence at the location.

With the matter remaining unresolved, Palijo approached the court. Acting on the court’s orders, police subsequently raided a house in Gul Latif Society, Qasimabad, and recovered the Indonesian woman.

The woman was later presented before the court by the Women’s Police Station.

Palijo said the law was equal for everyone and that harassing women or keeping them in unlawful confinement was a serious offence. She said the Women Development Department remained committed to taking measures for the protection and welfare of women.

She further stressed that police officers should ensure full cooperation with the Women Development Department in cases involving the safety and protection of women.
