Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a seven-member special committee headed by the finance minister as part of preparations for the federal budget for the new fiscal year 2026-27.
According to ARY News, the special committee will review all matters related to the budget and submit final recommendations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The committee also includes the minister for economic affairs, the minister for planning and the law minister. Chief Technical Adviser Musharraf Rasool and the additional secretary finance have also been made part of the committee.
After the prime minister’s approval, formal terms of reference for the budget committee have been issued.
Under the TORs, the committee will review the performance and financial requirements of the ministries of commerce, power, privatisation and IT. The Public Sector Development Programme for the new fiscal year will be proposed on the basis of ministries’ performance.
The budget committee will also review legal matters related to the Power Division that are pending in international courts. It will propose a framework for determining expenses required to pursue strong cases in international courts.
The TORs also include a review of financial support for green startups through the Climate Support Levy. Ministries will be bound to submit detailed reports on the implementation of government decisions regarding rightsizing.
