ISLAMABAD: Consumers are facing a heavy burden of levies, taxes and margins on petroleum products, with the retail price of petrol exceeding its basic cost by around Rs130 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by more than Rs116 per litre, according to official documents.
The documents show that the basic cost of petrol stands at Rs197.69 per litre, while its current retail price has been fixed at Rs327.62 per litre. Consumers are paying approximately Rs130.23 per litre in petroleum levy, climate support levy, customs duty and various margins.
The price buildup of petrol includes a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre, a climate support levy of Rs5, customs duty of Rs21.24, an Inland Freight Equalisation Margin (IFEM) of Rs7.48, an oil marketing companies’ margin of Rs7.87 and a dealers’ margin of Rs8.64 per litre.
Similarly, the basic cost of high-speed diesel stands at Rs264.76 per litre, compared with its retail price of Rs380.86 per litre.
According to the documents, consumers are paying around Rs116 per litre in levies, taxes and margins on HSD.
The price buildup for high-speed diesel includes a petroleum levy of Rs74.28 per litre and a climate support levy of Rs5 per litre.
In addition, consumers pay Rs15.68 per litre in customs duty, Rs4.63 as the Inland Freight Equalisation Margin, Rs7.87 as the oil marketing companies’ margin and Rs8.64 as the dealers’ margin.
The figures highlight the significant contribution of government levies, duties and industry margins to the final prices paid by consumers at fuel stations.
