ISLAMABAD – Captain (Retd.) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry is likely to be appointed as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad.

Reports suggest speculation is rife in police and administrative circles after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif summoned both incumbent IGP Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi and Police Training College Lahore Commandant Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry to his office.

Rizvi could be moved to the National Counter Crime Investigation Agency (NCCI), while Sohail Chaudhry could take charge of the Islamabad Police.

No official notification has been issued so far, and the reported postings cannot yet be treated as confirmed.

Who is Sohail Chaudhry?

Sohail Chaudhry would arrive in Islamabad with a career marked by high-profile operational assignments, frequent transfers and a reputation for taking a hard line on discipline and crime.

A BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), Chaudhry is a former Pakistan Army captain who later joined the police service. Over the years, he has served in several key positions across Punjab, including Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan.

He has also held important responsibilities within the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD).

Chaudhry’s career included a stint as Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, from where he was transferred in 2014 amid traffic-related issues surrounding the inauguration of a flyover.

He subsequently served as City Police Officer (CPO) Faisalabad around 2020–2021, where his aggressive approach toward criminal elements earned him a reputation as a tough officer. Local media and online platforms have at times referred to him as a “dabbang” officer.

His profile rose further in August 2021, when he was appointed DIG Operations Lahore following the high-profile harassment incident involving a TikToker at Greater Iqbal Park, Minar-e-Pakistan.

In 2022, Chaudhry was appointed DIG Counter Terrorism Department Punjab, but his tenure was short-lived. He was subsequently transferred out of Punjab and placed as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

He later returned to senior field and administrative responsibilities, including his stint as RPO Multan, overseeing policing in Multan and neighboring districts such as Vehari, Khanewal and Lodhran.

Chaudhry’s recent assignments have been marked by an emphasis on internal discipline and direct engagement with citizens.
