FIFA World Cup: 28 Teams Qualify, Final Four Spots to Be Decided Today

As the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup nears its conclusion, 28 teams have secured their places in the Round of 32, while the remaining four qualification spots will be decided in today’s matches.

The teams that have already advanced to the knockout stage include Portugal, Germany, Brazil, France, Argentina, Spain, Morocco, Norway, and co-hosts the United States, Mexico and Canada. Meanwhile, Qatar and Türkiye have failed to qualify for the next round.

Bosnia and Herzegovina and South Africa have made history by reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. Cape Verde has also created a record by becoming the smallest nation in World Cup history to reach the Round of 32, emerging as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

In another key group-stage fixture, Iran and Egypt played out a 1-1 draw. Iran had a goal disallowed for offside in the closing moments of the match, sparking widespread debate on social media.

Following the result, Egypt secured its place in the Round of 32, while Iran’s qualification will depend on the outcome of the final group-stage matches.

Although Iran has yet to win a match in the tournament, it remains a strong contender to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time.

In today’s fixtures, a defeat for either Croatia, Congo, Algeria or Austria would send Iran through to the next round. Similarly, Iran will also qualify if the match between Congo and Uzbekistan ends in a draw.

However, if both Croatia and Congo win their respective matches and Algeria’s match against Austria ends in a draw, Iran’s World Cup campaign will come to an end in the group stage.

IHC Declares Inclusion of Citizens in Passport Control List Without Due Process Illegal

The Islamabad High Court has declared it illegal to place the names of citizens on the Passport Control List (PCL) without following the prescribed legal procedure.

Justice Muhammad Azam Khan of the Islamabad High Court issued a five-page written judgment in a case involving a citizen whose name was placed on the Passport Control List after being deported from Türkiye.

The court ordered the removal of citizen Zain Ateeq’s name from the Passport Control List, ruling that travel restrictions cannot be imposed on a citizen without lawful authority and due process.

Declaring the inclusion of a citizen’s name in the Passport Control List without the prescribed procedure to be unlawful, the court noted that the petitioner’s name had been placed on the list in July 2022.

Upon the petitioner’s request, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) recommended removing his name from the PCL after more than two years had elapsed. However, the Passport Authority dismissed the application for removal from the PCL on the grounds of non-prosecution.

The court observed that a person deported for illegal entry or any other prohibited act cannot be kept on the Passport Control List indefinitely without approval from the competent authority. It further noted that the record contained no evidence that any authorized body had determined that the petitioner’s name should remain on the PCL.

The judgment further stated that there was no record of any conviction or pending criminal case against the petitioner in either Pakistan or Türkiye. In the absence of such a determination, the petitioner’s name could not legally remain on the Passport Control List.

Referring to the Shireen Mazari case, the court reiterated that travel restrictions on citizens may only be imposed by a lawful authority and in accordance with the prescribed legal procedure. The court held that the authorities had failed to fulfill these legal requirements in the present case. It added that although the Passport Authority has the final authority in such matters, the FIA’s recommendation cannot be ignored without valid and substantial reasons.

The court also observed that there were no pending criminal proceedings against the petitioner, no record of any conviction by a competent court, and no other legal basis to justify the continuation of the travel restriction.

FIFA Introduces Branding-Free ‘Player of the Match’ Trophy Option for Muslim Players

During the award presentation, the usual beer brand promotion was removed and replaced with a neutral “Superior Player of the Match” design alongside FIFA World Cup branding.

According to reports, Egypt’s Imam Ashour, Jordan’s Ali Olwan, Iran’s Ramin Rezaeian, Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada, and Ivory Coast’s Yan Diomande also received similar branding-free awards.

Three Earthquakes Strike Balochistan’s Kohlu in a Single Day, No Casualties Reported

Three earthquakes struck Balochistan’s Kohlu district and its surrounding areas in a single day, with no loss of life or property reported.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the first earthquake was recorded at 10:25 a.m. on Friday, followed by a second tremor at 10:58 a.m. A third earthquake struck the area at 4:49 p.m.

The PMD said the third earthquake measured 5.1 on the Richter scale and had a depth of 17 kilometres. Its epicentre was located 60 kilometres northeast of Kohlu. Tremors were also felt in Zhob, Barkhan and Rakhni.

According to experts, the Earth’s crust consists of three major tectonic plates: the Eurasian Plate, the Indian Plate and the Arabian Plate. As heat builds beneath the Earth’s surface, these plates shift, causing the ground to shake, a phenomenon known as an earthquake. The resulting seismic waves spread outward in all directions.

Experts say earthquakes occur due to the sudden release of energy within the Earth’s crust. This energy is often associated with volcanic lava reaching the Earth’s surface, while most earthquakes occur along fault zones where tectonic plates collide or rub against each other.

The effects of these plate movements are usually not felt on the Earth’s surface, but they create intense stress between the plates. When this stress is suddenly released, it generates strong vibrations known as seismic waves.

Experts also warn that areas that have experienced a major earthquake in the past remain vulnerable to another significant earthquake in the future.
