A video showing harsh treatment of a trader during a raid by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Karachi’s currency market has gone viral on social media.
According to media reports, FIA officials conducted a raid at a local currency market. CCTV footage from the operation appears to show officials physically assaulting shopkeepers. In the footage, an FIA officer can be seen grabbing a shop owner by the collar and slapping him.
When the owner’s son intervened and asked the officers to leave, they reportedly threatened to seal the shop. The video also shows officers slapping another individual inside the shop and removing jewelry from the counter.
The raid reportedly took place on May 14.
In response to the circulating footage, the FIA issued a clarification, stating that the Karachi zone took notice of the misleading and edited video. Officials emphasized that the operation was based on confidential information targeting individuals involved in silver smuggling.
Senior journalist Hamid Mir also commented on the video, posting on X that the conduct displayed does not reflect the behavior expected from employees of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He stated that the actions resembled those of intruders, not government officials, and criticized the upbringing of the officers for failing to teach proper interaction with ordinary citizens.
