PTA Reduces eSIM Fees, Introduces Free Profile Transfers to Promote Digital Adoption

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced key measures to promote the use of eSIM technology across the country, including reducing the fee for eSIM issuance and conversion from a traditional SIM to an eSIM.

According to the PTA, the maximum fee for issuing an eSIM or converting a conventional SIM into an eSIM has been fixed at Rs1,500. The revised fee will be implemented uniformly across Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

In a statement, the PTA said consumers will now be able to transfer their eSIM profile from one mobile device to another free of charge up to 10 times.

The authority has also expanded the free eSIM profile transfer facility to make the use of modern mobile technology more convenient for consumers.

According to the PTA, the revised fee structure and the enhanced free eSIM profile transfer facility will come into effect on August 17, 2026.

The authority said the primary objective of reducing the fee and increasing the free eSIM profile transfer limit is to encourage the adoption of eSIM technology in the country and enable a larger number of users to benefit from the modern digital service.

The PTA added that efforts are continuing to promote advanced technology and provide consumers with easier access to digital services.

The authority said the growing use of eSIM technology will make it more convenient for users to switch between mobile devices while providing easier access to modern digital services compared to traditional SIM cards.

The PTA expressed hope that the revised fee and the expanded free transfer facility would accelerate the adoption of eSIM technology across the country.

Jamaat-e-Islami Announces Nationwide Sit-ins Outside CM Houses and Governor Houses on Sunday

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami’s nationwide protest campaign against the increase in petroleum prices and the petroleum levy continued in Lahore on Friday, where the party’s Ameer, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, announced that sit-ins would be held outside the Chief Ministers’ Houses and Governor Houses in all four provinces on Sunday.

Addressing participants of the protest sit-in in Lahore, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said that no ambulance had been blocked during the demonstrations and that every emergency vehicle had been allowed to pass.

He said people had gathered because they were burdened by rising inflation. He claimed that when petroleum prices began declining in the international market, the government instead increased fuel prices, adding that taxes had continued to rise following the increase in petroleum product prices.

He declared that the protest movement would not stop and asked participants whether they were prepared to continue if he asked them not to leave the protest venue.

The Jamaat-e-Islami chief said the nation had to fight for its rights, adding that people were previously unaware of how the rulers were allegedly exploiting the public. He claimed that billions of rupees had been collected from citizens in taxes and stated that the petroleum levy amounted to Rs8 trillion.

Hafiz Naeem said his party had exposed the levy before the entire nation and insisted that it must be abolished, adding that Jamaat-e-Islami did not accept the levy. He also questioned whether Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had sought the International Monetary Fund’s approval before purchasing an aircraft worth Rs11 billion, claiming that the aircraft had been purchased with public money.

He said inflation primarily affected poor people and questioned whether the country’s elite had any understanding of the hardships caused by rising prices. He added that the existing system needed to be changed, saying that minor adjustments would not solve the country’s problems and that the current system had to be uprooted for real change to take place.

Hafiz Naeem said Jamaat-e-Islami viewed politics as a form of service and was struggling for the country’s 250 million people. He said the party wanted a state in which the people were included, adding that Pakistan had been established in the name of Allah and could not belong to bureaucrats or the elite. He called for the abolition of the petroleum levy and electricity taxes, saying a major public struggle lay ahead.

Describing the ongoing demonstrations as “just a trailer,” he said there would be a break on Saturday, after which Jamaat-e-Islami would march towards the Chief Minister’s House on Sunday. He said a historic movement had begun and announced that protest sit-ins would be staged outside the Chief Ministers’ Houses and Governor Houses in all four provinces.

Bilawal Says Real Battle Is Between Islamabad and Lahore, Not PPP and PML-N

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that he has no complaint against the Prime Minister, adding that the real dispute is something else and is a matter within the Prime Minister’s family.

Addressing a public gathering of the Pakistan Peoples Party in Bagh, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Bilawal said that a particular section within the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was working against the party’s own plans and was trying to create conflict between the party, the opposition and its coalition partners.

He said, “I am your ally and I am sitting in Islamabad. How is it acceptable that my votes are stolen, a party worker is martyred, my Member of the National Assembly is shot in the arm, and the President of Azad Kashmir is attacked? This is not an alliance. What is the real issue?”

Bilawal said that he had no complaint against the Prime Minister and that political competition between the PPP and the PML-N had always existed. However, he said the real conflict was something else.

He stated that the real battle was between Islamabad and Lahore and described it as a matter within the Prime Minister’s family, saying that if they wanted to fight, they should do so.

Bilawal further said that the people surrounding the Prime Minister did not have sincere intentions. He claimed that the countdown for the PML-N government had begun and that it had not been initiated by the Pakistan Peoples Party but by the government’s own people. He added that those claiming the government would complete its five-year term did not themselves believe it.

Referring to the situation in Kashmir, Bilawal said that it had never happened before that internet services remained suspended for 50 days, adding that Kashmir had never witnessed such a difficult period in its history.

He said the PPP was not aligned with either the government or the protesters but only wanted the public to receive their rights. He added that the people of the Poonch Division were bearing the burden of the difficult situation.

IHC Restrains NCCIA from Harassing Journalist Asad Toor During Inquiry

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday restrained the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) from harassing vlogger and journalist Asad Toor during the course of its inquiry.

The NCCIA had issued a notice to Toor on July 29 for an inquiry into the alleged dissemination, transmission and/or public exhibition of false or fake information. The notice directed him to appear before the NCCIA Cybercrime Reporting Centre in Islamabad at 11:00am on July 31.

Toor challenged the summons before the Islamabad High Court, arguing that the NCCIA had failed to fulfil the legal requirements while issuing the notice and had not provided details of the allegations against him.

The court had earlier directed the agency to furnish the details of the allegations. During the proceedings, Toor’s counsel argued that the NCCIA had still not specified the accusations, making it impossible for his client to respond effectively to the inquiry.

Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro heard the petition on Thursday.

During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel, Advocate Attaullah Kundi, informed the court that Asad Toor was willing to join the inquiry but feared that he might be arrested.

“We want to appear in the inquiry, but we do not want to be arrested,” the counsel submitted, adding that allegations of disseminating fake and false information had been levelled against the journalist.

Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro asked the petitioner’s counsel which specific news report had been termed fake. In response, Advocate Kundi stated that the allegation related to a news report concerning the medical condition of the PTI founder.

After hearing the arguments, the court directed that Asad Toor should not be harassed during the inquiry. The court also summoned the investigating officer in his personal capacity and adjourned further proceedings in the case.

Jamaat-e-Islami to Hold Sit-ins at 510 Locations Nationwide on Friday

Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has announced that the party will stage peaceful sit-ins at 510 locations across the country on Friday in protest against the petroleum levy, inflation, and rising petroleum product prices. He said traffic on major highways would be blocked during the demonstrations, while ambulances would be allowed to pass.

Addressing a protest organized by the Jamaat-e-Islami Women’s Wing on Wahdat Road in Lahore against inflation and the increase in petroleum product prices, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman warned that the party would expand its protest movement if any attempt was made to obstruct the demonstrations.

He demanded that the government abolish the petroleum levy and fix the price of petrol at Rs225 per litre.

Hafiz Naeem said the petroleum levy has a direct impact on the prices of essential commodities and that inflation is severely affecting ordinary citizens, particularly women. He added that the government has increased the tax burden on the public while failing to reduce its own expenditures.

He also alleged that despite a decline in global oil prices, the government had not reduced domestic petroleum product prices proportionately. He further claimed that the revenue collected through the petroleum levy had not been spent on improving the country’s energy sector infrastructure.

According to Jamaat-e-Islami’s announcement, nationwide sit-ins and demonstrations will begin at 4:00 pm on Friday, August 7. Major protest locations include Qurtaba Chowk in Lahore, Sharea Faisal in Karachi, Faizabad (26 Number Chungi) in Islamabad, Motorway Toll Plaza in Peshawar, Chungi No. 6, Bosan Road in Multan, Meezan Chowk (Ghazri Road) in Quetta, Barat Bagh, Murree Road in Rawalpindi, Chakdara Interchange in Swat, and the Indus Highway in Karak.

Government Accelerates Consultations on Creation of New Provinces

ISLAMABAD: Consultations at the government level on the creation of new provinces have intensified, with the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Law conducting a detailed review of the constitutional and legal aspects of the process.

According to parliamentary sources, the creation of new provinces requires implementation of Article 239 of the Constitution. The sources said that previously passed resolutions by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab assemblies carry no legal significance for the creation of new provinces.

They said that before seeking approval from the relevant provincial assembly, a constitutional amendment must first be passed by a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the National Assembly. At least four constitutional provisions would need to be amended for the establishment of new provinces.

Parliamentary sources stated that Articles 1, 51, 59, and 106 of the Constitution would require amendments. They added that the number of provinces, as well as the allocation of seats in the Senate, National Assembly, and provincial assemblies, would have to be revised. Seats reserved for women and minorities would also need to be reallocated.

According to the sources, under Article 239, the constitutional amendment bill would first be introduced in either the Senate or the National Assembly.

After securing a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament, the bill would be sent to the relevant provincial assembly instead of the President. Under Article 239, the provincial assembly would also have to approve the bill with a two-thirds majority.

The sources said that a new province can only be established after the bill receives two-thirds approval from the Senate, the National Assembly, and the concerned provincial assembly.

Following approval by the provincial assembly, the bill would be sent to the President for assent. Once approved by the President, the process for establishing the new province would formally begin.

However, parliamentary sources said that if the provincial assembly fails to pass the bill with a two-thirds majority, the entire process would become ineffective.
