Sindh Government-Backed Film ‘Mera Lyari’ Enters Oscar Awards Race

KARACHI: The Sindh government-backed film “Mera Lyari” has entered the race for Oscar Awards nominations, a development being described as a significant achievement for Pakistan’s film industry.

The Sindh government expressed hope that if the film succeeds in securing an official Oscar nomination, it would mark a historic milestone in the country’s cinematic history.

The development came to light during a meeting of the Film Board of the Sindh Information Department chaired by Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting reviewed the promotion of the provincial film industry, ongoing film projects, and future strategies.

Participants also discussed collaborations with various national and international OTT platforms, as well as progress regarding the exhibition and distribution of films.

During a briefing, the meeting was informed that the first phase of the Information Department’s ongoing film projects had been completed successfully. It was further stated that negotiations were underway with various OTT platforms and relevant organizations regarding the screening and distribution of the films.

Speaking at the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon said the Sindh government was taking serious steps to promote the film industry, culture, and creative sectors.

He said the film industry not only showcases the country’s cultural heritage and positive image to the world but also creates new opportunities for employment, investment, and the development of creative talent.

He further said the government’s objective is to develop Sindh into a strong filmmaking hub aligned with modern industry requirements, enabling local filmmakers and artists to demonstrate their talent on the global stage.

The meeting was attended by Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, Director General Information Moez Pirzada, Director Films Hizbullah Memon, Film Board members Waqas Rizvi, Saleem Khan, Ehtesham Ansari, Rab Nawaz, and other relevant officials.

Participants also exchanged proposals regarding future film projects and the development of the creative sector.
