According to police officials, the former senator was detained while allegedly participating in a rally that had not received prior permission from the relevant authorities.

The local administration said Section 144 is currently in force in Islamabad, under which public gatherings and rallies are prohibited. It added that legal action is being taken against those found violating the restrictions.

Ahsan Iqbal Wins Defamation Case Against PTI Leader Murad Saeed

ISLAMABAD: District and sessions court in Islamabad has issued its verdict in the defamation case filed by Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former federal minister Murad Saeed, ruling in favour of Ahsan Iqbal.

Additional Sessions Judge Hakim Khan accepted the defamation suit and directed Murad Saeed to pay Rs2.5 million in damages to Ahsan Iqbal for harming his reputation.

In its judgment, the court held that Murad Saeed failed to prove his allegations that Ahsan Iqbal was involved in Rs70 billion worth of corruption. The court ruled that the accusations of corruption, misuse of authority, and receiving illegal commissions amounted to defamation.

The judgment noted that Ahsan Iqbal had originally sought Rs10 billion in damages. However, the court observed that the amount claimed was excessive in light of the available evidence. It added that the disputed statements had nevertheless harmed Ahsan Iqbal’s reputation, honour, and dignity.

According to the court, the allegations created a negative impression of Ahsan Iqbal among the public and constituted a direct attack on his integrity, character, and reputation.

The court further observed that Murad Saeed neither appeared before the court nor presented any evidence in support of the allegations.

The case stemmed from a 2019 press conference, during which Murad Saeed, then serving as a federal minister, accused Ahsan Iqbal of corruption in the Multan-Sukkur Motorway project.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Friday said that Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s thinking was “outdated” and that using the word “cockroaches” for young people was inappropriate.

Speaking to the media during the annual Urs celebrations of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (RA) in Bhit Shah, the chief minister expressed his views on the teachings of the great Sufi saint, Kashmir, the proposal for new provinces, youth, motorway funds, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), employees’ rights and other issues.

The chief minister prayed that Allah Almighty bless everyone with a life of peace, prosperity and mutual love, and that peace, brotherhood and unity always prevail in the country.

Speaking about Kashmir, Murad Ali Shah said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had taken a clear stance in support of the Kashmiri people and was raising his voice for their rights and welfare. He said the PPP had always stood by the people of Kashmir and, from Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to President Asif Ali Zardari, the party had consistently remained the voice of Kashmir.

He added that the PPP had always adopted a principled position on the Kashmir issue, raised its voice at every level and made sacrifices for the cause.

Heavy Monsoon Rains Flood Murree, Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Disrupt Daily Life

ISLAMABAD: Torrential monsoon rains severely disrupted normal life in Murree, Rawalpindi and Islamabad, triggering landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, damage to homes and shops, and the drowning of a child in a rainwater drain.

In Murree, intermittent heavy rainfall continued throughout the day, leaving large parts of the hill station inundated. A four-storey building collapsed at Lakot on the Murree Expressway following a landslide. Landslides were also reported in Jhika Gali, Kausar Colony and Dhak, placing several houses at risk.

Heavy rainfall also affected Rawalpindi and Islamabad, disrupting routine life across the twin cities. According to the Flood Control Room, the latest spell of rain began at 4:40am, with the highest rainfall of 103 millimetres recorded at Kutchery Chaklala.

The rainfall caused the water level in Nullah Lai to rise to 10 feet, prompting authorities to issue a pre-alert at Gawalmandi.

Meanwhile, a tragic incident occurred in Friends Colony on Misrial Road, where a child drowned in a rainwater drain while playing.

The heavy rain also inundated Rawalpindi’s historic Raja Bazaar. Poor drainage arrangements in the area, which was recently declared a model bazaar, allowed rainwater to enter shops, causing traders losses worth millions of rupees.

Fawara Chowk and adjoining roads were also submerged. Residents said no official from the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation was present at the site during the flooding.

Managing Director Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Azizullah Khan said operations were carried out to drain accumulated rainwater from Saddarabad, Dhoke Kala Khan, Gawalmandi, Millat Colony, Javed Colony, Jan Colony, Misrial Road, Girja Road, Dhamial and other low-lying areas.

Barrister Gohar

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Calls for Immediate Formation of National Government

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar has called for the immediate formation of a national government in the country.

Responding to a statement by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Barrister Gohar said that the government was talking about creating new administrative units and provinces. He questioned whether it had the mandate to do so, adding that constitutional amendments related to provinces require broad political consensus and a public mandate, which, according to him, neither of the two major political parties possesses.

Barrister Gohar said the public should be told who had pushed the current system into “default mode.” He alleged that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) were responsible for the destruction of the system. He further claimed that not only Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif but also PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari were products of “Form 47.”

The PTI chairman demanded the immediate establishment of a national government, saying such a setup should be formed so that the country could move towards fresh elections.

IHC Directs NCCIA to Provide Asad Toor Details of Allegations Behind Summons

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday directed the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to provide vlogger and journalist Asad Toor with details of the allegations against him in connection with a summons issued by the agency.

The NCCIA had issued a notice to Toor on Wednesday as part of an inquiry into the alleged dissemination, transmission and/or public exhibition of false or fake information. The notice directed him to appear before the NCCIA Cybercrime Reporting Centre in Islamabad at 11am on July 31.

Toor challenged the summons in the Islamabad High Court on Thursday, arguing that the NCCIA had failed to fulfil the legal requirements while issuing the notice and had not provided details of the allegations against him.

The petition came up for hearing before Justice Mohammad Azam Khan on Friday. Advocate Attaullah Kundi appeared on behalf of the petitioner.

During the hearing, the court asked the petitioner’s counsel why his client did not appear before the NCCIA and whether he had a defence.

In response, Advocate Kundi told the court that the petitioner was unaware of the exact allegations against him and, therefore, did not know what he was expected to answer.

The counsel submitted that all details and material relating to the allegations should be provided to the petitioner in advance.

Justice Mohammad Azam Khan observed that the petition would be disposed of with directions to the NCCIA to provide the petitioner with all relevant details concerning the allegations.

Advocate Kundi said that providing such details was precisely what the petitioner had requested.

The Islamabad High Court subsequently disposed of the petition, directing the NCCIA to furnish Asad Toor with details of the allegations against him.

Meanwhile, the National Press Club (NPC) on Wednesday condemned the NCCIA notice issued to Toor and expressed concern over the state of press freedom.

Describing freedom of expression as a constitutional right, the NPC leadership said that subjecting journalists to legal pressure and retaliation for performing their professional duties or expressing critical opinions was not a good sign for any democratic society.

The NPC urged institutions to perform their respective roles in accordance with the law, the Constitution and fundamental human rights.

It stated that free, responsible and safe journalism is the foundation of a strong democratic system and demanded that the notice against Toor be withdrawn and the constitutional and legal rights of journalists be respected.

The NPC also warned against measures that curtail press freedom and create insecurity among the journalist community.

DG ISPR

Kashmir Is Our Most Beloved Child, Says DG ISPR

Rawalpindi: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that Kashmir is the state’s “most beloved child” and that it was and will always remain Pakistan’s jugular vein.

Responding to a question during a press conference about the ongoing protest movement in Azad Kashmir, he said that it is important to keep the basic facts in mind to understand the Kashmir issue.

He said that the future of Kashmir will be decided by the Kashmiris themselves. According to him, when the question of accession is put before them, Kashmiris will choose to join Pakistan. He said this would not only be because of their cultural and religious affinity with Pakistan, but also because they have witnessed what he described as Indian oppression and because they left behind the graves of their ancestors when they came to Pakistan.

The DG ISPR said that India has deployed nearly one million security personnel in Indian-administered Kashmir. He stated that people require a no-objection certificate (NOC) to travel from one village to another and that individuals can be taken from their homes at any time. Despite this, he said, India has not been able to eliminate the Kashmiris’ attachment to Pakistan.

He further said that after failing to weaken this sentiment, India attempted to buy the loyalty of Kashmiri Muslims in Indian-administered Kashmir. He added that people could ask Kashmiri Muslims, Sikhs, minorities, and even Indian courts about the situation, saying they would reveal what he described as India’s true face.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that measures such as Articles 35A and 370 also failed to weaken pro-Pakistan sentiment in Kashmir. He said that after what he described as the “Pahalgam drama,” which he claimed backfired for India in May, India adopted what he called a new strategy of trying to create unrest in Pakistan’s part of Kashmir.

He stated that India already had elements in the form of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), but this time, according to him, an attempt was made to spread unrest under the guise of rights.

The DG ISPR said that the state allowed these elements to expose themselves, after which, according to him, they openly opposed reserved seats for refugees. He said this was not because of constitutional or legal considerations, but because they wanted to impose their demands through force.

He said that the monopoly over the use of force belongs only to the state. He questioned that if groups were given such authority, then why the state was fighting Fitna al-Hindustan and the Khawarij.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry further said that the protesters insulted the heroes of the Kashmir freedom movement and began promoting Maharaja Hari Singh’s narrative. He also read out a social media post that, according to him, contained remarks against Sardar Ibrahim and Sardar Qayyum.

He said the protesters demanded that the “occupying army” be removed, questioning whose army they were referring to. He said it was Pakistan’s Army and added that thousands of Kashmiri soldiers serve in it. He noted that the commander of Rawalpindi Corps was from Kashmir, that Tal Patra is in Kashmir where Captain Sarwar of Gujar Khan sacrificed his life, and that Nishan-e-Haider recipients Shaheed Lalak Jan and Shaheed Sher Khan embraced martyrdom during the Kargil conflict. He questioned how anyone could describe Pakistan’s Army as an occupying force and accused such people of wanting those whom he alleged commit crimes in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The DG ISPR also said that protesters in Kashmir spread propaganda on social media by sharing videos of people they claimed had died, but those individuals later appeared and stated that they were alive.

He clarified that the Pakistan Army has no role in the situation in Azad Kashmir, saying that the matter is being handled by the Azad Kashmir government and the Kashmir Police. He referred to Inspector Naeem, saying he belonged to the same community and alleged that he had been brutally killed at the instigation of the same protest leaders.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that no one can change the slogan, “Kashmir Banega Pakistan, and we are Pakistanis and Pakistan is ours,” in Kashmir. He said elections will also be held in Kashmir and that answers to all questions lie within the rule of law and the constitutional framework. He added that whoever committed wrongdoing would be held accountable.

Bilawal bhutto

Bilawal Urges PTI to End Boycott, Join Hands for Free and Fair Elections in AJK

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday invited Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to join hands for transparent elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), urging the party to end its boycott of the electoral process and work together on a one-point agenda of electoral reforms.

Addressing a public gathering in Muzaffarabad, Bilawal criticized the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), saying the party may have carried out development work in Lahore but had done nothing for Azad Kashmir.

He said he did not want Kashmir to become like Punjab or Sindh and wanted it to remain Azad Kashmir. He added that after the elections, a constitutional convention would be convened with the participation of the government, opposition, refugee representatives, lawyers, and civil society.

Bilawal said he wanted peace and justice in Kashmir and maintained that decisions regarding the region should be made by its elected assembly. Stressing the principle of public sovereignty, he said every vote should produce its rightful mandate.

The PPP chairman also called for property rights and employment opportunities for Kashmiri residents. He said local people should be given jobs and business opportunities in every development project. Referring to digital connectivity, he said internet services had been restored in Muzaffarabad and Mirpur by his party and pledged to extend internet access to Poonch so that Kashmiris could remain connected with the world.

Criticizing the PML-N’s development claims, Bilawal said the party frequently referred to projects completed in Lahore but the people of Azad Kashmir would ask what it had done for Muzaffarabad. He said residents were aware of the CMH Flyover project and added that although the PML-N often cited Karachi’s University Road project, it had itself launched that scheme in 2023 and it had yet to be completed.

He further said the PML-N continued to praise Lahore despite failing to complete the CMH Flyover over several years, while the PPP had delivered a flyover in Muzaffarabad. Bilawal also claimed that universities in Kashmir had been established by the PPP, not by the PML-N.

Offers Alliance to PTI

Addressing the PTI directly, Bilawal urged the party to abandon the politics of boycott. He said that if PTI wanted to boycott elections, it should stay at home, but if it wished to bring change, it should contest elections instead.

He said he was extending a hand of cooperation to PTI workers, its serious leadership, and every political party that had suffered injustice. He invited them to work together to introduce electoral reforms and ensure free and transparent elections in Kashmir.

Bilawal said that if cooperation remained limited to a one-point agenda of electoral reforms and transparent elections, he was prepared to work with every political party.
