US President Donald Trump’s image may soon appear on a proposed $250 American currency note, with reports suggesting that early-stage preparations have taken place within the US Treasury Department.

According to foreign media reports, The Washington Post has claimed that a proposal is under consideration to include Trump’s portrait on the proposed $250 note. If approved, it would mark the first time in nearly 150 years that the image of a living person or sitting president appears on US currency.

The report said the proposed note is being prepared to mark 250 years of American independence.

According to The Washington Post, two officials close to Trump who were appointed at the Treasury Department last year instructed staff at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to prepare initial samples.

The report said some officials raised legal objections to the proposal, noting that US law does not allow the image of a living president or person to be printed on currency.

Bureau Director Patricia Soliman also pointed out legal and administrative obstacles, but was later removed from her post.

Critics say the Trump administration is attempting to place a personal imprint on national institutions and symbols. Trump’s name has previously been linked to several government and cultural institutions.

US Senator Mark Warner strongly criticized the plan, calling it an attempt to boost President Trump’s ego.
