Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ameer Maulana Attaur Rehman has defended party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, saying that a storm of criticism was created over an incomplete sentence from his speech and challenging critics to listen to the entire address before commenting.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar, Maulana Attaur Rehman said the successful JUI conference held in Kasur had not been accepted by some people. He said that following the event on July 13, an incomplete sentence from Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s speech was highlighted, leading to widespread criticism and demands for the JUI chief to apologize.

He said that if critics had the courage, they should listen to the complete speech instead of commenting on remarks taken out of context. According to him, Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s speech was being interpreted without considering its context in an attempt to reduce his popularity.

Maulana Attaur Rehman further said efforts were being made to confine Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s influence to a single province, adding that the JUI chief had become dominant in the minds of his opponents. He said JUI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa fully supports Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s statement.

He said JUI had made significant sacrifices for the country, noting that 80 party workers were killed in the Bajaur gathering alone. He added that the party’s religious scholars had also been targeted, yet JUI continued to stand with the state. He said it was unfair that all those sacrifices had been overlooked because of a single sentence, while mud was being thrown at Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s character.
