Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho has acknowledged that lapses occurred in the police handling of the Mir Raza murder case, saying a new team is now investigating the case in light of a fresh medico-legal report.
Addressing a ceremony at the Sindh Bar Council, Javed Alam Odho said lawyers and police were part of the same criminal justice system. He said lawyers were the supreme licensing authority and had significant responsibilities.
“We are here to resolve problems and find solutions,” the Sindh IG said, adding that 27,000 police personnel had been punished over the past seven months.
He urged the Sindh Bar Council to make maximum use of its powers, saying lawyers were an educated segment of society and that working together would strengthen the system. He added that police stations would not be surrounded and issues would instead be resolved through dialogue.
Speaking about the police force, Odho said that out of 160,000 police personnel, 132,000 were performing duties.
He said the overall law and order situation in Karachi had improved, adding that crime in the city had declined by 14 percent.
‘Lapses Occurred in Mir Raza Case’
Speaking about the Mir Raza case, the Sindh IG described the killing as tragic and acknowledged that lapses had occurred in the case.
He said work on the murder case was now being carried out in light of a new medico-legal report. The newly formed investigation team had been instructed to conduct a transparent and independent investigation.
When asked about the Mir Raza family’s demand for action against the previous investigation team, Odho said action would be taken in accordance with the law.
He added that the investigation was still underway and declined to comment further.
