The government has announced a major reduction in petroleum prices, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif saying the decision fulfills a promise made to the nation.
Addressing the public, the prime minister said petrol prices would be reduced by Rs74 per litre, while diesel prices would be cut by Rs67 per litre.
Following the reduction, the price of petrol will fall from Rs373 per litre to Rs299 per litre, while diesel will decline from Rs378 per litre to Rs311 per litre.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government was fully aware of the hardships faced by the people and appreciated the patience and resilience shown by citizens during difficult times.
“We are deeply grateful to the people for supporting the government during this challenging period,” he said.
The prime minister added that since the beginning of the crisis, the government had tried to reduce oil prices as much as possible using its available resources and had taken steps to shield the public from the impact of rising global inflation.
He further said that any reduction in oil prices in the international market was being passed on to the people in full.
Mr Sharif said the government had adopted austerity measures throughout the crisis and had also provided subsidies to underprivileged segments of society as part of relief efforts.
“Providing maximum relief to the people remains the government’s top priority,” the prime minister said.
