Audit report has revealed that the national exchequer suffered a loss of more than Rs42.93 billion in connection with the Neelum-Jhelum project.
According to audit officials, NESPAK committed technical lapses and carried out poor supervision in the Neelum-Jhelum project. The Neelum-Jhelum Power Plant was shut down in July 2022 after a tunnel collapse, while another incident occurred in the Neelum-Jhelum tunnel in May 2024.
Officials said the shutdown of the project caused losses worth billions of rupees in electricity generation. They added that the total loss caused by restoration work and suspension of power generation reached Rs42.934 billion.
According to the secretary of the Cabinet Division, the federal government is conducting an inquiry into the matter.
Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue Syed Naveed Qamar questioned why inquiries into NESPAK-related matters were always under way but never completed.
Meanwhile, the Public Accounts Committee deferred the matter until the inquiry report is received.
