Google is rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to both new and existing vehicles equipped with Google built-in systems. This marks a significant upgrade from the older Google Assistant platform introduced in 2018.
The new system is designed to enable more advanced, human-like conversations while still managing essential car functions.
Previously, Google Assistant in cars focused on navigation, journey planning, climate control, and media playback. With Gemini, these functions remain intact.
However, the AI now adds the ability to handle more complex queries—similar to interactions currently available on smartphones.
Software update for existing vehicles
Google confirmed that Gemini will not be limited to new models. Vehicles already equipped with Google built-in will receive the upgrade through a software update.
The company reiterated its earlier commitment made when the system first launched in 2020—that cars would improve over time through updates.
Millions of vehicles to benefit
General Motors has revealed that around four million vehicles in the United States will receive the upgrade.
This includes newer models from brands such as Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC.
The initial rollout will begin in the United States and will support US English language users.
Google has indicated that expansion to additional languages and countries is planned in the near future.
Competition heats up in smart car space
Google is not alone in the race to dominate in-car AI. Apple continues to enhance its CarPlay system, while Amazon is expanding its Alexa Auto platform.
The competition highlights a growing push toward smarter, more connected driving experiences.
The rise of voice assistants in vehicles has also sparked safety concerns. A 2016 study by the University of Utah found that certain voice-based tasks could create high mental workload for drivers.
However, proponents argue that such systems allow drivers to control features and access information without taking their hands off the wheel or eyes off the road.
