ISLAMABAD: An unsettling incident was reported at a university campus in Islamabad during a student protest, where a man dressed in military uniform allegedly opened fire into the air following a confrontation with protesting students.

According to students present at the scene, the protest began after an alleged dispute between their department head, Dr Jadoon Khan, and the university’s HR manager. The students said they had gathered to express solidarity with their teacher and demand justice over what they described as inappropriate treatment and threats against him.

The students alleged that the HR manager, a woman, behaved inappropriately toward Dr Khan, pushed him and threatened to have a false case registered against him. The students subsequently staged a protest on campus carrying placards and chanting slogans calling for “Justice for Sir.”

According to the protesters, the HR manager, who they said is the wife of an army officer, arrived at the protest site and became involved in a heated exchange with students. They alleged that she slapped some students before calling her husband to the campus.

The students further claimed that the officer arrived wearing his official military uniform and allegedly struck a student with a stick. The confrontation reportedly escalated after students reacted strongly, prompting the officer to allegedly draw his pistol and fire shots into the air.

Senior journalist Hamid Mir claimed that the Pakistan Army had taken immediate notice of the incident and that the officer had been taken into custody, with proceedings initiated against him. These claims could not independently be verified from official sources at the time of reporting.

An Islamabad Police officer also reportedly reached the campus and assured students that action would be taken against the officer.

Students at the campus maintained that their protest was aimed at opposing alleged threats and what they described as false cases against their teacher. They called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the incident and urged the authorities to determine responsibility for the confrontation and alleged firing.

The university administration, police and relevant military authorities have yet to publicly provide a detailed account of the incident.
