ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has decided to stop cooperating with the government on legislation in Parliament and standing committees until its concerns are addressed.
PPP leader Syed Naveed Qamar said the party would not participate in legislative proceedings in the House or parliamentary standing committees, stressing that the government was a coalition partner and that “it takes two hands to clap.”
He said the PPP had serious reservations but the government had failed to take them seriously.
Qamar said the party’s concerns included judicial reforms, the situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and other issues. He said the PPP had decided that it would not participate in legislation until the government demonstrated meaningful progress on these matters.
He further said a bill concerning local government in Islamabad was introduced in the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior a day earlier.
According to Qamar, the proposed legislation could create obstacles to the local government elections in Islamabad. He said PPP members neither voted in favour of the bill nor supported it and also submitted a note of dissent.
The PPP leader’s statement signals growing differences between the coalition partners over legislative and political matters.
