In Jacobabad, an armed mob attacked the village of Muhammad Siddique Arain over a love marriage, setting more than 150 homes on fire. The incident has sparked widespread concern over honor-based violence and safety for couples exercising their right to choose.

Background of the Incident

According to the police, the attack was triggered after a video of the couple’s marriage went viral on social media. Approximately 400 armed individuals allegedly stormed the village, targeting homes of the family of Mohammad Hassan Burro, one of the newlyweds.

The couple, Sidra Channa and Mohammad Hassan Burro, had run away from their homes on May 4 and got married in Hyderabad on May 5. Following the viral video, the mob attacked, burning over 100 houses in retaliation.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Police have registered two separate cases: one for kidnapping allegations and another for arson in the village. So far, five suspects have been arrested, while several others remain at large.

Statements from the Couple

Sidra Channa, the bride, stated that she is an adult and married of her own free will. Mohammad Hassan Burro, the groom, expressed fear for his life, saying, “My village has been burned, and my life is at risk. We need protection.”

Government Response

The Sindh government has taken notice of the incident. Government spokesperson Sadia Javed confirmed that the kidnapping allegations were reported by the family before the bride provided her statement clarifying that she had consented to the marriage.

Sadia Javed also said that the police reached the village when the suspects attempted to set homes on fire and managed to arrest five individuals, though some had secured pre-arrest bail, limiting police action.

The case has now moved to court, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed immediate assistance for the affected families.
