The government has decided to file a review petition before the Supreme Court against its decision directing the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to a hospital for treatment.
Speaking about the court proceedings in the case concerning the PTI founder, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the government had reviewed the order regarding Imran Khan’s treatment and would approach the Supreme Court seeking a review of the decision.
The law minister said other points included in the court order had also been discussed and consulted upon. He questioned whether the Supreme Court’s order would apply to all prisoners, noting that there were many inmates in jails who also faced health-related issues.
Azam Nazeer Tarar said convicted prisoners were provided treatment facilities at government hospitals. However, he said that following the Supreme Court’s decision, the question had arisen as to whether the order would now apply to all prisoners.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had issued its written decision regarding Imran Khan’s health and directed that he be shifted to Al-Shifa Hospital in Islamabad for treatment.
The Supreme Court had also ordered that Imran Khan be allowed to meet his family and lawyer once a week.
At the same time, the Supreme Court clarified that no information regarding Imran Khan’s health would be broadcast in the media. The court also directed that politics would not be carried out over the matter.
The court further ordered that Imran Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal, and his sister, Dr Uzma, would remain with him during the treatment.
The government’s decision to approach the Supreme Court for a review follows its consideration of the court’s directions regarding Imran Khan’s treatment, the other points contained in the order and the question of whether the decision would have implications for other prisoners facing health-related issues.
