Saudi Arabia has rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s call to join the Abraham Accords with Israel, making clear that it will not normalize relations without the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

Saudi Arabia responded firmly to Trump’s appeal, stating that its position on the Palestinian issue remains unchanged.

In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said any possible agreement would require a clear, credible and irreversible path toward the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

The ministry added that relations with Israel would only be possible if genuine guarantees existed for a two-state solution, as lasting peace in the Middle East depends on a just and comprehensive settlement.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has also said on several occasions that Saudi Arabia will not recognize Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud has repeated the same position at the United Nations and other international forums, saying real stability in the region is only possible through the creation of a Palestinian state.

A day earlier, President Trump had said that Muslim countries linked to the Iran agreement must also join the Abraham Accords.

Trump said he made the demand during telephone discussions on the Iran agreement with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey and other countries.
