DHAKA: Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing deteriorating health and his inability to continue performing the responsibilities of the country’s highest constitutional office.
President Shahabuddin submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the National Parliament on Tuesday evening, and the resignation has been received by the Parliament Secretariat.
In his resignation letter, the president said he has been suffering from several serious health conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney complications.
He stated that he had previously undergone heart bypass surgery and that a recent medical examination diagnosed him with autonomic neuropathy, a condition that causes him to occasionally lose consciousness for short periods.
President Shahabuddin wrote that the progression of these illnesses, along with the resulting physical and mental disability, has made it impossible for him to fulfill the responsibilities of the presidency.
He added that he requires long-term medical treatment and has therefore decided to resign from the office of President under Article 50(3) of the Constitution of Bangladesh.
