US President Donald Trump has announced the removal of sanctions imposed on Türkiye and also indicated his willingness to approve the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Ankara.

The announcement was made during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the NATO Summit, where President Trump said that the United States was lifting the sanctions imposed on Türkiye.

The United States had imposed sanctions on Türkiye in 2020 under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) after Ankara purchased the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.

The sanctions imposed in 2020 included restrictions on US export licenses and the supply of defense equipment to Türkiye’s Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB).

The measures also included the freezing of assets and visa restrictions against the then-head of the SSB, Ismail Demir, and other Turkish defense officials. In addition, certain loans and financial assistance from US financial institutions to Türkiye were also restricted.

President Trump also expressed near agreement on the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Türkiye.

Meanwhile, Israel has urged the United States to reconsider any decision to allow Ankara to rejoin the F-35 fighter jet program.
