Google is reportedly testing a reduction in the free cloud storage offered to users, particularly for those creating a new Gmail or Google account.
According to a report by Android Authority, new Gmail accounts currently receive 15 GB of free cloud storage, which is considered ample for most users. However, Google appears to be trialing a reduction to just 5 GB of free storage for new accounts.
The report notes that users who link their phone number to their account will still receive the full 15 GB of storage. A screenshot confirming this trial has also surfaced.
Google’s support page still states that every account comes with 15 GB of free storage, but the company has confirmed that this new storage policy is being tested.
In a statement, Google said, “We are testing a new storage policy for new accounts.” The company added that the trial is currently limited to specific regions and is intended to enhance account security and assist with data recovery.
